Every Contractor Said the Deck Needed Replaced
I call this Deck Rescue Painting Project the #justdoitdeck. The Customer, a Hebron, KY Deck Owner had reached a breaking-point point of extreme unhappiness with her severely weathered, dilapidated backyard deck. Being Familiar with Kong Armor’s amazing Deck Rescue Painting Projects, and High Quality Work. The Deck Owner was ready to hire, “Give me the Price and Just do it” is what she told me, in simple terms.
“Yes, Mam!”
A major undertaking as far as a deck rescue painting project. The Hebron, KY Deck (technically a patio) had definitely seen its better days. All previous contractors the homeowner had meet with specified tear-down-to-frame re-decking, or full demo and deck replacement. It was easy to understand why. There was a layer about 1/8 of an inch thick of soot, dirt, and grime over the decks’ entire surface. The local airplane traffic from the Cincinnati -Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) close by was likely a contributing factor in the soot accumulation.
The Severely Weathered Wood Decking Surface also had significant Splintering, Cracking, Shelving, Cupping. Nails were Popping everywhere. A significant portion of floor boards were beyond resurfacing and would need replacement. Even Kong Armor™ and it’s High-Build First-in-Class Deck Resurfacing ability would not be able to rebuild their severely cracked and sun scorched surfaces.
A Path to Deck Rescue is Found
However, a closer look at the structure revealed hope for Rescue! I broke-out my pocket knife and scraped the black soot off the surface. Underneath was healthy wood, with only mild weathering in most areas.
A majority of the Floor Planks, Seventy Percent (70%) or more, were viable, even quite healthy. Acting as the pill making the deck ill and also seemingly better at the same time was a thick layer of grime. The thick layer of dirt, soot and algae over the wood surfaces seemed to have functioned as a “sort-of” protective layer, preventing the Sun and elements from causing extreme UV- Damage and Surface Deterioration. I had seen this happen before, multiple times throughout my career. Thick Layers of Soot, Grime and even Algae can function as a natural weatherproofing.
What looked like a beat down, severely weathered deck on the verge of replacement, was simply an extremely dirty deck. With around 30 random sized deck boards needing replaced out of approximately a little over a hundred in total. The outside of the deck was of no real concern. It had weathering, cracks, and all the normal things you would expect from an aged structure. Though it was strong, sound, and well within the capabilities of repair and Armor Encapsulation.

Cleaning
The Deck Rescue Painters of Kong Armor™ brought a stiff cleaning to the aged structure on Day One of the Project! We did not play around with it or baby the deck surfaces. We wanted to put a little force into the aged surfaces. This exposes any hidden rot or poor condition. Accordingly, we used traditional high pressure deck cleaning with multiple spray tips paired with agitation techniques and also chemical lifting agents. And drove home an adequate cleaning of the structure. Cleaning alone made the deck(patio) look like a different structure.
Deck Cleaning is the foundation of Deck Armor Adhesion here at Kong Armor™. Experience is important here. We find that most D-I-Y and even “professional deck painting” applications that fail and peel, are directly related to under cleaning or poorly cleaned surfaces. Decks, and especially older decks, take way more passes, and effort to clean than most humans realize. When you think they are clean, they still have tons of dirt and grime hiding, in their surface pours and cracks.
Deck Repair and New Deck Rails
Once cleaned the Deck Rescue Painting Project switched to its Repair and Restoration Phase. On Day Two the Deck Rescue Painters of Kong Armor™ replace approximately Thirty (30) Pressure Treated Pine Decking Boards. Ranging in lengths between one and sixteen feet.
The Deck Owner, taking advantage of the massive cost savings avoiding the fate of deck replacement decided to make a change order and had us build and add railings to the structure. As I pointed out earlier in this writing, it was technically a patio, with no railings. With New railings added. It was now a proper deck
We also completed an extensive deck restoration scope of work on the structure that is Proprietary. I cannot release all of the details. But it includes tightening, general maintenance protocols to eradicate past years of non-annual maintenance, fastener set downs, safety improvements, and more. Using brushes and rollers, the Deck Rescue Painters of Kong pressed the Armor Coating into open cracks and fastener holes to achieve True Water Lock. Then, they applied several additional High-Build Coats to LockDown the deck surfaces for good, creating a very high-build, synthetic, drop-dead gorgeous finish.

A major Deck Resurfacing Event for sure, Our World’s Toughest Deck Armor made it look easy. In fact, it was not even a challenge for the undefeated King of Tough Deck Coatings. By days end we were able to bring closure for the deck owner. After years of staring at a filthy, dirty, severely weathered backyard patio-deck she now had Lifetime Deck Armor and a Fully Restored, beautiful deck.
